We’re coming up on October–better known ’round these parts as Inktober–and I hadn’t really thought about it until now, but both October and November have their own creative challenges.
Obviously, there’s the aforementioned Inktober, which sees participants post ink drawings on a regular basis throughout the month, and also Sculptober, which is a daily challenge for those who enjoy creating in three dimensions. October 5th also brings 24-Hour Comics Day, wherein the goal is to create a 24-page comic book within a single day. Then there’s November, a.k.a. National Novel Writing Month, which challenges authors to write 50,000 words of a novel within 30 days.
I’m considering doing Inktober again, but on a much smaller scale as it can be pretty demanding for me to create a 6″X6″ drawing every day. The last time I did so, it took about four hours each day to complete the drawings, which was exciting, but not what I’d call “fun.” I also considered doing 24-Hour Comics Day (not to be confused with Hourly Comics Day, which thankfully is months away on February 1) but once I took stock of the fact that I’m already working on a 44-page comic right now, I decided to nix the idea.
Yes, I think it’d be a lot of fun to do all these projects at once, and the thought had crossed my mind that I could manage it. However, realistic time management is key for any creative project, and with my current “main” project being at least another ten months away from completion, I think that maybe I’ll pass on going all-out this year.
